Delusions of Parasitosis
Dr. Daine Zhang
University of California, Riverside
Delusions of Parasitosis, (DOP, Ekbom syndrome) is a form of emotional disorder that presents with a delusion of being infested with parasites. Patients with DOP are convinced that living organisms are living on or in their body. The complaints usually include itching, biting, stinging, burning and or crawling sensations. They often visit numerous dermatologists or pest control companies in search of help. The mental and emotional stress could lead to destructive behaviors such as quitting jobs, burning furniture, abandoning homes, or using pesticides dangerously and repeatedly. |
